PIGEON KINGS - Feature Documentary

PIGEON KINGS - Feature Documentary

OUR STORY:
PIGEON KINGS takes us through the backyards of South Central Los Angeles, where men are devoted to tumbling pigeons. We watch as enthusiasts breed and train their birds for the Birmingham Roller Pigeon World Cup, where birds must fly together and somersault in unison, like a flock of synchronized swimmers in the sky.
Keith London is the focus of our story. The lives of other Roller fanciers, such as Jaime and Choo Choo, are interwoven throughout his journey. We learn that the pigeons provide the birdmen with a community and a sense of hope. As long as they have their birds, nothing will stop these men from pushing forward.

Keith has an exceptional ability to train his pigeons, holding onto godfather-like status in the Roller world. A devoted father, Keith tries to secure steady work as he goes through a divorce.

Jaime’s infectious optimism and contagious laugh ensure that he is rarely alone. He calls his pigeons "children" and finds a sense of belonging as a member of the South Central Rollers pigeon club.

Choo Choo is a barber and owner of Mirror Barbershop. He is an up-and-comer in the bird world and when he enlists Keith as his mentor, Choo Choo rises to new heights.

Director/ Producer/ Cinematographer:
I (Milena Pastreich) stumbled upon the Los Angeles community of Roller Pigeon fanciers in 2011 while location scouting pigeon coops for I FEEL STUPID, my UCLA Graduate School thesis film. I immediately knew I had to tell the story of the Roller men and their birds. I began my journey as an outsider in the pigeon world but over the course of the last 5 years, have earned the title “bird lady.” I have shot features and directed shorts that have screened at Cannes, Tribeca, and SXSW. PIGEON KINGS is my directorial feature debut.

Producers:
Matthew Perniciaro and Michael Sherman of Bow and Arrow Entertainment have produced award-winning films that have screened at Sundance, Berlin, Venice, SXSW, and Tribeca.

Editors:
Victor Livingston, editor of CRUMB and QUEEN OF VERSAILLES; Meryl O’Connor, editor and director of THE BALAD OF FINN AND YETI; and Jeff Malmberg, editor and director of MARWENCOL
